☆ Why the Shohei Ohtani story is so concerning for baseball and sports

CNN —I can’t recall a recent baseball story that has captured the public imagination like the current one involving Los Angeles Dodgers phenom Shohei Ohtani, his former translator Ippei Mizuhara and gambling. That said, assuming Ohtani has done nothing wrong, America’s pastime will emerge from this situation mostly unscathed. Ohtani stalls at second base after hitting a double during the first inning of a game against the St. Louis Cardinals. Yes, one team is favored to win, but we don’t know that team will win for sure. And if it occurs involving someone as beloved as Ohtani, it could be a disaster for not just baseball, but sports around the globe.

LONDON (AP) — Go into many bookstores, and the nonfiction shelves will be dominated by men. The Women’s Prize for Nonfiction hopes to change that. An offshoot of the 28-year-old Women’s Prize for Fiction, whose past winners include Zadie Smith, Tayari Jones and Barbara Kingsolver, the new prize is open to female English-language writers from any country in any nonfiction genre. Lipscomb noted that in 2022, only 26.5% of nonfiction books reviewed in Britain’s newspapers were by women, and male writers dominated established nonfiction writing prizes. Authors from the United States, Australia, Canada, India, Jamaica, the Philippines and the U.K. are on the prize longlist, chosen from 120 books submitted by publishers.

In some circles, it is heretical to maintain that women and men are biologically different, largely because such differences have in the past been manipulated toward misogynist ends. Ms. Bohannon believes that “while the majority of scientists still effectively ignore the female body, there’s a quiet revolution in the science of womanhood brewing.”

The idea is that by examining how women evolved differently from men, Bohannon argues, we can “provide the latest answers to women’s most basic questions about their bodies.” These include, she says: Why do women menstruate? Thanks to regulations established in the 1970s, clinical trials in the United States have typically used mostly male subjects, from mice to humans. For example: “From 1996 to 2006, more than 79 percent of animal studies published in the scientific journal Pain included only male subjects,” she writes. As she points out in “Eve,” antidepressants and pain medications are considered gender-neutral, despite evidence that they affect women differently than they do men. “When we put the female body back in the frame, even people who don’t have female bodies have a better of idea of where we all stand in this huge evolutionary story.”

Questions about bets placed on Alabama baseball games surfaced late last week. Integrity, an independent firm that contracts with government regulators and sports leagues—including the Southeastern Conference, where Alabama plays—alerted the Ohio Casino Control Commission to what it described as suspicious bets placed on April 28 at the sports book located at Cincinnati Reds’ Great American Ball Park.
